Energy-efficient combustion engines require injection systems enabling fuel pressures of up to 2,000 bars (for diesels) in order to atomize the fuel into extremely small droplets. Since the injectors are directly subjected to this pressure, their manufacturing makes high demands on the constant monitoring of quality, precision and process reliability.

The fuel is fed at a high pressure through the nozzle into the combustion chamber of the cylinder. The nozzle features very fine ports that are opened and shut by a needle in sync with the combustion cycle of each cylinder.

The guide clearance tolerance between needle and nozzle is in the range of a few micrometers. This makes high demands not only on the nozzle’s geometry (especially in the sealing area), but also on its surface parameters and form tolerances. The special metrology challenge consists in exactly positioning the sensors inside the valve body in order to ensure reliable measuring runs.
